Question: In Mark 11:14, Jesus answered the fig tree. Does this mean that the fig tree actually talked to God?
Answer: Scripture confirms that things do; communicate with God; Luke 19:40, “…..if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.” Everything in one form or another, communicates with God; Ps. 69:34, “let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.” Although it is possible for the fig tree to speak to God; however in this case, the text does not indicate that it actually spoke to Jesus. The Strong’s word for answered is #G611 and it means: to conclude for oneself and to begin to speak. When Jesus found no fruit on the fig tree, he concluded that this tree was unfruitful; Mt. 3:10, “…..every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down…..” This tree should have been producing fruit but for some unknown reason, it was not producing; therefore Jesus concluded it was unfruitful and he begin to speak to it; thus destroying the fig tree forever.
