{"id":632,"date":"2011-09-02T08:55:51","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T12:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/epistleofchrist.org\/?p=632"},"modified":"2011-09-02T14:26:38","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T18:26:38","slug":"marriage-is-a-lifetime-commitment-why-is-there-a-provision-for-divorce","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/epistleofchrist.org\/?page_id=632","title":{"rendered":"If marriage is a lifetime commitment, why is there a provision for divorce?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Question:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When comparing marriage with our relationship to Christ, one would conclude that Christ never leaves us; it is us who leaves him.\u00a0 Marriage is a covenant that God keeps, no matter what the circumstances.\u00a0\u00a0 Marriage is a lifetime commitment and to be committed to marriage in the physical sense is the same as Christ is committed to us in the spiritual sense; therefore an argument can be made against divorce.\u00a0 If all of the above is true, then why is there a provision made by Jesus in the New Testament regarding divorce when adultery is involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong> Marriage is a life long commitment.\u00a0 God always honors his covenants; unfortunately, that\u2019s not the case with mankind. Divorce is serious business with God.\u00a0 Look at the penalty for\u00a0adultery in the Old Testament; Lev. 20:10, \u201c\u2026..the man that committeth adultery with <em>another<\/em> man&#8217;s wife, <em>even he<\/em> that committeth adultery with his neighbour&#8217;s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the sanctity of marriage.\u00a0 When a man and a woman enter a covenant of marriage, a spiritual change takes place; Mt. 19:5-6, \u201c\u2026..and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh\u2026..no more twain, but one flesh\u2026..\u201d\u00a0 If one party engages in adultery; now the three individuals become one flesh; 1 Cor. 6:16, \u201c\u2026..know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.\u201d\u00a0 This is a violation of God\u2019s law, because a marriage is a covenant of two becoming one; not three or more becoming one.<\/p>\n<p>Do not confuse the words <em>adultery<\/em> and \u00a0<em>fornication<\/em>.\u00a0 Both of these acts are unlawful sex.\u00a0 The meaning of the word <em>fornication <\/em>includes adultery.\u00a0 The penalty for fornication is the same as the penalty for adultery; Deu. 22:23-24, \u201cif a damsel <em>that is<\/em> a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her\u2026..ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die.\u201d\u00a0 In the Old Testament, the penalty for adultery and fornication was death.\u00a0 In the New Testament, the penalty has been relaxed.\u00a0 The penalty is now divorce; however, adultery or fornication is the only valid reason for divorce.
