Is it necessary to tithe today?

Question:        If tithing began with the Levitical Law, why is it necessary to tithe today?

Answer:          The Law gave the Levites authority to take tithes; Heb. 7:5, “…..they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law…..”  Yes that is true; the Levites did have a commandment to receive tithes, but that was not the beginning of the tithe.  The first time tithes were mentioned was in the days of Abram(ham); Gen. 14:20, “…..blessed be the Most High God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.”  Tithing is not limited to only the Levitcal Priesthood, because it was initiated and extended by God, to all of mankind, long before Israel ever became a nation.  The Levitical priesthood was not established until Israel was wandering in the wilderness.

Yes, tithing is still in effect today and it was so stated by Jesus; Lu. 11:42, “…..for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs…..these ought ye to have done.”  Tithing is an act of love that is manifested through your giving.  When one gives his tithe, he’s actually giving it to God; Lev. 27:30, “…..all the tithe of the land….. is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.”  Paying your tithes is similar to paying your taxes; Mt. 22:21, “…..Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
