Ananias is the name of several individuals in the New Testament and one of the early Christians. Ananias means the Lord has favored.
- Ananias was one of the early Christians. Ananias and his wife Sapphira agreed to sell a portion of their property and donate the proceeds to the apostle's cause. After selling the property, they withheld part of the selling price. The Holy Spirit revealed the deception to Peter that they were holding back part of the money. First, Ananias came to the apostles, and Peter questioned him about the amount of money, and he told the lie that he and Sapphira had agreed to donate. Immediately, he fell dead. Next, Sapphira appeared before the apostles, Peter questioned her, and she told the same lie that Ananias told, and immediately, she fell lifeless.
- Ananias was a Christian during the time of Paul's conversion to Christianity. The Lord told Ananias to welcome Paul as a new believer, but Ananias was reluctant because of Paul's previous reputation as a Christian persecutor. Ananias was obedient and laid-hands-on Paul, causing him to receive his sight. After having his sight restored, Paul received baptism as a Christian.
- Ananias was the high priest that ordered the guards to smite Paul on his mouth. He was also instrumental in bringing accusations against Paul when his hearing came before Felix.
