Zimri is the name of several men in the Old Testament. Two of them are pretty distinguished.
- Zimri was from the tribe of Simeon. He received recognition for bringing Cobzi, a Midianite woman, into the Israelites' camp while they were repenting for worshiping Baalpeor. Phinehas killed Zimri and Cobzi with a spear.
- Zimri was the fifth king of Israel to reign over the ten northern tribes. He was a captain under King Elah, but he murdered the king and assumed the kingship. When Omri, the commander of Elah's army, received the news that Zimri had assassinated King Elah, he surrounded Tirzah, the capital city. The people of Israel declared Omri to be their new king instead of Zimri. Realizing his defeat, Zimri committed suicide by burning down the king's house while he remained in it. Zimri only reigned for seven days, the shortest reign of any king of Judah or Israel.
