Jacob
is the son of Isaac and Rebekah. His twin brother is named Esau. Jacob means heal-catcher; therefore, Isaac and Rebekah named him Jacob because he grabbed his brother Esau's heel at birth. He purchased the birthright from his brother Esau with bread and pottage of lentils. With the help of his mother, Jacob received the blessing designated for the firstborn from his father. His brother Esau was angry with him and vowed to kill him; therefore, he fled to Padanaram. On the way to Padanaram, Jacob dreamed of a ladder protruding into heaven. In Padanaram, he met Rachel. Jacob was madly in love with her and desperately wanted to marry her. He bargained with her father, Laban, to work for seven years to gain her hand in marriage. Laban beguiled him and gave him her sister Leah to be his wife instead. Jacob then agreed to work another seven years for Rachel. God blessed Jacob, and everything he touched seemed to prosper. Jacob worked for Laban for a total of 20 years. He had 11 sons and one daughter with his wives and two handmaidens. Laban repeatedly changed his wages. Finally, Jacob took his children and possessions and departed from under the hand of Laban. He wrestled with an angel who changed his name from Jacob to Israel. These events took place before he crossed the borders of Israel. On the way to see his father, Isaac, Rachel died in childbirth with her son Benjamin, giving Jacob 12 sons. His 12 sons became the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob favored his two sons by his wife Rachel over his other sons. Jacob wept when his sons informed him that Joseph was dead. Later he discovered that Joseph was alive and a ruler in Egypt. Jacob then moved his entire family to Egypt and spent 17 years there. He lived a total of 147 years, and they buried him in the cave of Machpelah with his ancestors. Jacob is in the lineage of Jesus Christ.
