David was the son of Jesse. He was the second king of Israel when the Israelites united under one king. He began to reign at age 30 and reigned for 40 years. David's name means beloved. He was the youngest of Jesse's eight sons. He tended to the flock, and his musical aspirations consisted of playing the harp. David was successful in killing Goliath with a slingshot. He was a very close friend of Jonathan, King Saul's son. David married one of Saul's daughters, but Saul pursued him to kill him. David had several opportunities to kill King Saul, but he refused to kill him, stating that Saul was God's anointed king. David had many children by multiple women. After being anointed king of Israel, it took many years before the kingship came to fruition. After King Saul's death, David became king of Judah, but it took another two years before the two kingdoms' unification under David's reign. As king, David committed adultery with Bathsheba, who conceived a child. David sought to cover up the affair by having Uriah, Bathsheba's husband, murdered. He later had a contention with his son Absalom, and Ahithophel, his most trusted friend and counselor. God did not allow David to build his temple because too much blood was on his hands. By no means did David lead a perfect life, but he was a man after God's own heart because whenever he made a mistake, he always repented and never again repeated that same mistake. David was in the lineage of Jesus.
